Kru Juice on the art of eight limbs and the kinetic chain
Muay Thai, often known as the "Art of Eight Limbs," is a dynamic martial art that requires the practitioner to use The best boxing, elbows, knees, and devastating kicks. Beyond the physical, however, there is a cognitive side that is essential to mastering this ancient sport. One may argue that the cognitive phase of learning in Muay Thai is just as important as the physical training, or even more so. In this article, we'll look at the relevance of this phase and its symbiotic relationship with the kinetic chain.
Starting with the cognitive phase: Muay Thai is more than just punching and kicking; it's about mastering the mechanics, tactics, and strategies that get you to the target, and back again out of the same range.
The comprehension and mental processing of these tactics and strategies are part of the cognitive phase of learning. Learners observe and assimilate the movements during this phase, comprehending the intricacies of each technique, its uses, and potential counterattacks. Rather like playing chess, sometimes in reverse. Even at times sideways.
Visualization is an important tool during this stage. Many teachers emphasize the significance of mentally rehearsing motions before performing them physically.
Things such as shadow boxing, creating visualized footwork and tea parties. You could also shadow box around the tea party, really confusing those kids; they certainly do it to us enough.
When a pupil mentally simulates a technique, they can better understand its complexities and increase muscle memory when they practice physically. Furthermore, the cognitive capacity to predict an opponent's move and respond accordingly during sparring is invaluable, and this is cultivated throughout the cognitive learning phase and its various drills and practices.

Wisarut Wat Suksiriwararak is an old Muay Thai fighter from Pai in Northern Thailand. He now runs his own gym in Pai, passing down his knowledge of Thailand’s traditional martial art to both locals and visitors from around the world. Over the past few decades, the authentic practices of Muay Thai have slowly begun to fade away. This historic martial art now centers around financial incentives and entertainment as Thailand’s culture becomes increasingly commercialized. Filmmaker Marko Randelovic shows Suksiriwararak's fight to preserve the traditional aspects of the sport in his short film Fighter: The Legend of a Muay Thai Boxer.
