Kru Juice on the benefits of building out a cooperative company for Muay Thai:

Today I would like to highlight another cooperative that has been standing the test of time: REI.
I will often say we would like to be the REI of Muay Thai.
Why? Read below to find out more, and see why a cooperative structure benefits the owners and members alike, creating a better environment , community and economy.

REI is a well-known outdoor retailer that sells a wide range of camping, hiking, cycling, climbing, and other outdoor-related items and services. However, REI is more than a store; it is also a cooperative, which is a form of business owned and governed by its members, who share in its revenues and advantages. In this essay, we will look at how REI’s cooperative structure benefits the community, its members, and its staff, as well as how it demonstrates market resiliency.

REI was started in 1938 by a group of 23 mountaineers who wished to pool their resources in order to purchase high-quality outdoor gear at reasonable prices. They established a cooperative, a democratic organization based on the “one member, one vote” premise. REI now has over 20 million members who pay a one-time charge of $20 to join the co-op and take use of its perks. Among these advantages are:

- Annual dividends: Each year, members earn a portion of REI’s profits depending on their purchases. REI will pay out $193 million in dividends to its members in 20207.
- unique discounts, coupons, and sales on REI products and services: Members receive access to unique discounts, coupons, and sales on REI products and services.
- Member-only experiences: REI and its partners offer outdoor workshops, events, trips, and volunteer opportunities to members.
- Member voice: Members have the ability to elect the board of directors of REI, vote on crucial topics, and submit feedback to the co-op.
