In the world of combat sports, few fighters embody technical mastery and career longevity quite like Nong-O Hama. From the traditional rings of Thailand to the global stage of ONE Championship, his journey represents the pinnacle of Muay Thai excellence spanning more than two decades.
From Humble Beginnings to National Icon
Born Apichet Kotanon in 1986 in Thailand's northeastern province of Sakon Nakhon, Nong-O's story begins with remarkable hardship. Raised in a farming family facing significant financial struggles, he started training in Muay Thai at just nine years old after watching a neighbor work a heavy bag. Within a month, he had his first fight, using his winnings to help support his family.
At 14, he made what must have been an agonizing decision for someone so young—leaving home for Bangkok to pursue Muay Thai full-time, living and training at his gym. This sacrifice would be the foundation for one of the most decorated careers in the sport's history.
Dominating Thailand's Legendary Stadiums
The technical brilliance that would become Nong-O's trademark quickly propelled him through the ranks. At just 15, he made his first appearance at the prestigious Rajadamnern Stadium, winning an undercard bout that would launch a career spanning over 300 professional fights.
His trophy cabinet grew to include four Lumpinee Stadium World Championships across different weight classes, a Rajadamnern Stadium World Championship, two Thailand National Championships, and multiple "Fighter of the Year" awards in his homeland. During this period, he became renowned for his precise striking, devastating low kicks, and masterful clinch work.
Nong-O's classic battles against fellow legends such as Saenchai, Sagetdao Petpayathai, and Singdam Kiatmuu9 are still referenced as some of the greatest matchups in Muay Thai history. His stadium career saw him not only fight but often defeat many of the era's best, including winning the prestigious Toyota Marathon Tournament in 2014 and capturing the Rajadamnern Stadium Lightweight title.
A New Chapter with ONE Championship
After an illustrious stadium career, Nong-O took a hiatus in 2015, relocating to Singapore to serve as a Muay Thai instructor at Evolve MMA, where he helped develop the next generation of fighters. But the competitive fire still burned within him.
In 2018, Nong-O made a triumphant return to competition, signing with ONE Championship as part of their inaugural ONE Super Series. He made an immediate impact, defeating Fabio Pinca by unanimous decision in his promotional debut on April 20, 2018, followed by another victory over Mehdi Zatout later that year.
The pinnacle came on February 16, 2019, when Nong-O defeated Han Zihao to become the inaugural ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion. What followed was a reign of dominance few have matched in combat sports, as he successfully defended his title seven times against elite international challengers over the next four years.
His title defenses included spectacular knockout victories over Saemapetch Fairtex, Rodlek P.K. Saenchaimuaythaigym, Felipe Lobo, and British star Liam Harrison—the latter dispatched in under three minutes with devastating leg kicks.
Facing Adversity and Reinvention
Even legends face setbacks. In April 2023, Nong-O lost his title to Jonathan Haggerty via knockout, marking the first time he had been stopped in years. He suffered another knockout loss to Nico Carrillo in December 2023.
Rather than retiring as many fighters might after such setbacks, especially approaching 40 years of age, Nong-O returned to form in 2024, defeating Kulabdam Sor.Jor.Piek-U-Thai by unanimous decision in April.
Looking for new challenges in 2025, Nong-O dropped to the flyweight division as the bantamweight competition grew increasingly larger and younger. His flyweight debut came against Kongthoranee Sor Sommai at ONE Fight Night 28 in February 2025, resulting in a split decision loss. But true to his resilient character, he rematched Kongthoranee at ONE Fight Night 31 on May 3, 2025, avenging his loss with a unanimous decision victory at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok.
